Why Homebirth?

People begin looking into alternatives to birthing in the hospital for various reasons. Perhaps you arrived at my site already knowing homebirth is for you. Perhaps you came unsure and looking for more information. Perhaps you’ve never even heard of homebirth. Below is a link to an article from The Journal of Perinatal Education about how birth physiologically works and how your body addresses a common source of concern: pain. This article also addresses the physical and emotional benefits of having a medicine free birth for both you and your baby.

Highlights include:
-Your body releases endorphins to counteract the pain (which is much less than the pain experienced with Pitocin in the hospital, if you are familiar with that sensation)
-You and your baby are working together the whole time and no medicines interfere with that hormonal and spiritual communication
-You aren’t limited to specific positions and can move however you need to to be comfortable and help your baby come down and out
-Your baby is alert right after birth instead of sleepy which helps with falling in love together

While you can have a medicine free birth in a birth center or hospital as well, homebirth offers an environment where someone with a low-risk, healthy pregnancy can have autonomy in labor. You are free to do as you please so long as it doesn’t impact you or baby negatively. You are in your home, with the people you love, where you are at peace. You are not pressured to be on a specific timetable or get the epidural because it will “make everything easier.” You are not interrupted constantly in your process, whatever that looks like, nor left alone when you need support. You are in the sacred work of bringing new life into the world, and your labor and birth are treated as such.
